Vail Automotive Classic - Sunday 2010
"This car was delivered new to Domenico D’Antona in Siena, Italy, painted as a
two-tone, in amaranto (dark red) with an ivory roof, and beige cloth with
amaranto leather. There were 43 Europa GTs built in coupe or berlinetta
configuration, mostly from Pinin Farina, although Vignale and Boano provided
designs. The 15th of 27 Pinin Farina coupes, this GT was fitted with the
2,600-mm, long-wheelbase 508 chassis and Tipo 112 motor. Europa GTs were the
first Ferraris to have the Colombo-designed 3-liter V12 that would ultimately
propel the company’s most successful series, the 250 GT. The car lived for
decades in Colorado. In fact, Bill Tolch, who owned it from 1967 to 1987, hopes
to be reunited with it on the 2010 Grand. Richard Merritt undertook a
restoration, and with his son Kendall raced the car the early 1990s at such
tracks as Lime Rock and Summit Point."
